JUNIOR CURLING
SALSC/RCCC Funspiel West of Scotland Qualifier
At Waterfront Curling Rink in Greenock on Sunday 7 December, 2008, eight
junior curling clubs contested the West of Scotland qualifier for the
SALSC/RCCC Championship.
Eight teams were entered in the U13 category and six teams entered in
the U15 category. Junior clubs taking part were drawn from a wide
catchment area and included: Ayr, Harvies, Galleon, Greenacres,
Braehead, Hamilton and Waterfront Ice Rinks.
After a very closely fought series of three and four end games, the
final placings could not be determined until the very last of the Draw
Shot/Strike Challenges was completed. In the end the U13 winner was the
team from Hamilton which was about to be joined in the winners enclosure
by their U15 club mates until a dramatic late rally in the Strike
Challenge presented the award to Greenacres. All of the awards were
presented on the day by Provost of Inverclyde, Michael McCormick.
The winners in each category have now qualified to contest the National
Finals at Braehead on 28 March 2009.
Everyone who was there on Sunday enjoyed a wonderful experience of
junior curling at its best and credit for a superb piece of organisation
is due to Organiser David Horne, Curling Officer at Braehead; assisted
by current Inverclyde ACDO, Stewart Sutherland and their willing band of
coaches and helpers.
