BOYS GOLF

VICTORY FOR RENFREWSHIRE IN SALSC’S NATIONAL BOYS GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils’ Annual National Inter District Boys Golf Tournament supported by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrew’s was held at Torrance House Golf Club, East Kilbride and in wet conditions the Tournament was won by the Renfrewshire team of Fergus Smith, Gavin Hay, Philip Gordon and Fraser McNeill who recorded a gross score of 225.

Runner Up was East Kilbride with Aberdeenshire in third position.

In this project, hosted by East Kilbride Sports Council in partnership with South Lanarkshire Leisure, the winners of the Handicap Team competition was the Clydesdale team of Simon Fleming (9), Ruaraidh Gardner (5), Fraser Campbell (6) and Ryan Crawford (6) with a net score of 214.

Runner Up was Tweeddale with Cambuslang and Rutherglen in third position.

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIONS

Winner of the Individual Scratch Tournament was Gavin Hay of Renfrewshire, the recent winner of the West of Scotland Boys’ Matchplay Championship.

Gavin returned an excellent score, in the rain, of 73 to win by two strokes from Alan Welsh of East Kilbride and Nick McAndrew from Aberdeenshire.

Victory in the Handicap tournament went to Clydesdale’s Simon Fleming (9) with a new score of 71 pipping his Clydesdale team mate Ruaraidh Gardner with a better inward half.

In third position from Moray District was Ryan Copeland with a 72 and a better last six holes score to pip several other competitors.

UNDER 16 YEARS WINNER

Winner of the Boat of Garten Trophy for the Best Scratch score in the Under 16 years Tournament was Craig Ross from Cambuslang and Rutherglen with a score of 76.

Mr Jim Ballantyne, Chairman of East Kilbride Sports Council thanked the Sports Councils who participated in this year’s tournament and the young Golfers for many good scores in the wet conditions.

The Chairman also thanked the Starter Ian Welsh, the Catering Staff and several members of Torrance House Golf Club for their assistance in recording the scores.

Thanks were also given to South Lanarkshire Leisure’s Millar Stoddart and Marion Wotherspoon for organising the Tournament.

SALSC Sports Events Chairman, Ron Sim from Moray thanked East Kilbride Sports Council and South Lanarkshire Leisure for hosting the Tournament and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews for their continued support.
