Sport Clydesdale

International Bowlers At Thankerton

The 19th Clydesdale Sports Council International Ladies Bowling Tournament was hosted by Thankerton Bowling Club on Friday 21st August.

Twenty four international Bowlers, including Scottish, British, Commonwealth, European and Atlantic Championship medal winners were in the line up.

In addition, as usual, the Ladies Club Champions for 2008 within the Clydesdale area were invited to participate and eleven champions accepted the invitation.

Following lunch, former Sports Council Chairman and Secretary Millar Stoddart welcomed the Scottish Women’s Bowling Association President Christine Curran, Office Bearers, Internationalist and Local Club Champions to this popular annual event and following an afternoon of Bowls, the winning rink featured the Carluke Castlehill Bowling Club Champion Molly Forgie, European 2009 Pairs Championship gold medal winner, Lynn Stein (Methil Bowling Club) who was also a silver medal winner at the 2009 Hong Kong Classic and internationalists Joyce Dickey (Hawick Bowling Club) and Claire Johnston (Auchinleck Bowling Club).

The Runners Up were Blackwood Victoria‘s Margaret McSkimming, skip Liz Dickson (Eyemouth Bowling Club), Maureen Shimmons (Annbank Bowling Club) and Betty Aitken, Director of Finance of the Association.

The rink in third position featured Crawford Bowling Club’s Marjorie Bell which was skipped by Seona Black from Bonnybridge Bowling Club along with Karen Dawson (Denny Bowling Club) and Anne Dunwoodie, internationalist and the Herald Bowls correspondent.

Prizes were presented by Sports Council Chairman David Strachan who, during his Vote of Thanks, thanked the Scottish Women’s Bowling Association for their support and co-operation in the twenty-seventh year of this excellent project.

The Chairman also thanked Thankerton Bowling Club for the use of their facilities and green. In addition Mr Strachan also congratulated the ladies and gents members of the club for their excellent in-house catering which was gratefully appreciated.

David Strachan also complimented South Lanarkshire Leisure’s Sports Council Liaison Officer Colin McKendrick for the appropriate administration arrangements.
